Fugitive in Custody After Firing at Officers

On May 18, 2021, at 10:45 a.m., officers were attempting to serve a fugitive with outstanding warrants from James City County. The suspect was located in a local apartment complex. A foot pursuit ensued in the area of Nat Turner Road in Port Warwick. The suspect then began to fire at officers who returned fire. A citizen, in the area, was able to stop and hold the suspect until officers detained him. There were no injuries during this incident. The 22-year-old male suspect, Deston Coward of Yorktown, was taken into custody. Additional charges out of Newport News are pending.
